Eleanor Donaldson has initiated the process to challenge the verdict from her trial of the facts, in which she was found responsible for actions related to all five charges against her. Among these allegations, four pertained to her role in assisting and facilitating the offenses committed by her husband, Jeffrey Donaldson.
Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), was convicted on 18 counts of sexual abuse, including one count of rape, against two women who were minors at the time of the offenses. Eleanor’s trial took place concurrently with her husband’s case at Newry Crown Court during May and June, following a determination that she was unfit to undergo a standard trial due to mental health concerns.
The Northern Ireland Courts Service officially confirmed on Thursday that Eleanor Donaldson’s legal representation had formally submitted an application for leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal. As a result of the mental health ruling, she is ineligible for a prison sentence but may instead be subject to a treatment order or receive an absolute discharge. The presiding judge is expected to make a decision regarding this matter in October.
