A man in his 60s from the Stockport area of Greater Manchester, who secretly drugged and sexually assaulted his wife over a period exceeding 20 years, will no longer be part of a trial involving multiple other defendants, a jury has been informed. The husband has admitted to 60 offences against his wife, including rape, assault by penetration, administering a substance with intent, and sharing indecent images without her consent.
This individual had already pleaded guilty to 15 offences that dated back to 2022 but recently acknowledged an additional 45 charges. His wife, who attended the proceedings with support from family members, was present in the courtroom as he pleaded guilty to the numerous allegations. Although he is no longer facing trial, twelve other men remain accused of serious sexual offences, including rape, involving the same victim. These men are scheduled to face trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
The court also heard that the other defendants have allegedly abused the woman since September 2018. A fourteenth man involved has admitted to sexual offences against her as well. When the jurors were sworn in on 4 September, they were provided with a questionnaire that briefly outlined the prosecution’s case. Trial judge Maurice Greene explained to the jury that the prosecution relates to allegations against a number of men, 14 in total, one of whom was the husband.
Judge Greene went on to clarify the situation by stating, “Some of you may have seen or heard on the news on Monday that a man from Stockport had pleaded guilty to drugging and raping his wife, and had admitted multiple offences including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault and administering a substance with intent.” He emphasized the importance of protecting the wife’s identity and confirmed that because of the husband’s guilty pleas, he would no longer be considered a defendant in this trial. The remaining accused include men from various locations such as Stockport, Manchester, and other parts of the UK. The judge indicated that the prosecution’s case is expected to begin on 5 October with the trial anticipated to conclude by 18 December
