An Anthropic co-founder has proposed the implementation of an AI “kill switch” designed to deactivate AI software if it becomes excessively hazardous. Jack Clark, one of the company’s seven founders, explained to the BBC that most AI research labs, including Anthropic, have various methods to “pull the plug” on AI systems. However, he noted that legislative measures might be necessary to mandate such capabilities across the board.

Despite this suggestion, the UK government has dismissed the idea of establishing a legal mechanism to control or shut down AI systems in emergency situations. The notion of a “kill switch” was presented in Parliament by both Lords and MPs as a way to manage potentially dangerous AI models. Nonetheless, a spokesperson from the Cabinet Office responded by asserting that the UK “cannot simply turn AI off.” They emphasized that even blocking access to AI models domestically would not prevent their development or misuse in other countries.

Meanwhile, in the United States, former President Donald Trump has openly rejected concerns about AI dominating the world. On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump labeled fears of AI “destroying Humanity” as a “HOAX.” He further accused what he termed “the Radical Left Dumocrats” of spreading this AI hoax, comparing it to his characterization of “the Global Warming Scam,” which he attributes to the political left.
