A dress worn by Princess Diana at a London party, just hours after a documentary aired in which then-Prince Charles confessed to having been unfaithful during their marriage, is set to be auctioned. This striking black silk evening gown, designed specifically for her by Christina Stambolian, was showcased during her memorable arrival at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994. The moment quickly became a defining pop-culture event.
The media famously labeled the outfit the “revenge dress” due to the timing and bold statement it represented. Sotheby’s, the auction house handling the sale, anticipates that the dress could fetch up to $300,000 (£220,000) when it is auctioned on December 9. This marks the first occasion since 1997 that the gown has been put up for sale; at that time, the late princess auctioned 79 of her dresses to support charitable causes.
According to Sotheby’s, Morgane Halimi, the Global Head of Handbags and Fashion, remarked on Diana’s unique ability to use fashion as a form of communication. She explained that Princess Diana “understood instinctively” that what she wore could convey powerful messages independently of words.
Halimi further emphasized the significance of the dress by saying, “On her own terms, Princess Diana turned the dress into one of the most powerful messages she ever made, during one of the most scrutinised and emotionally charged episodes of her life.” She added, “She walked into a moment in which so much of her story was being told for her and, through what she chose to wear, reclaimed the narrative for herself.
