The mother of a 19-year-old victim, one of three individuals stabbed to death in Nottingham, has vowed to pursue justice for the remainder of her life following the conclusion of the public inquiry into the tragic events. Barnaby Webber, from Taunton in Somerset, lost his life alongside Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates on 13 June 2023 in an attack carried out by Valdo Calocane.
Emma Webber, Barnaby’s mother, expressed the profound impact of the loss, stating, “The rest of my life is going to be dealing with this.” The inquiry, which wrapped up earlier this week, revealed that Barnaby’s death was deemed “potentially preventable,” prompting calls for accountability and changes. Counsel to the inquiry, Rachel Langdale KC, commended the families involved for exposing “one failure after another” throughout the investigation.
Speaking to BBC Somerset, Emma Webber highlighted the distressing new information that emerged towards the end of the inquiry, saying, “We’ve had some shocking new evidence disclosed as late as last Friday that requires further questioning.” She emphasized that her son might have survived with faster emergency medical intervention and improved coordination by the police control room during the critical moments following the attack.
The inquiry detailed that the prompt administration of blood products could have significantly increased Barnaby’s chances of reaching hospital with a stable heartbeat to undergo surgery. Nevertheless, it was noted that a range of swift and specific actions would have needed to be implemented for survival to be possible, underscoring the complex challenges faced during the emergency response
