A delegation of around 50 senior officials and business leaders from Shandong Province in China visited Liverpool, aiming to enhance international cooperation in trade, investment, and innovation. This group was led by Sun Ximin, Vice Governor of Shandong, and included representatives from government, academia, and industry, with over 30 senior executives from prominent Shandong companies. Their visit concentrated on sectors such as life sciences, maritime industries, logistics, advanced manufacturing, and infrastructure investment.
During their stay, the delegation engaged with local figures from Liverpool City Council, regional partners, universities, and businesses. These exchanges took place on Thursday, 10 September, at the Crowne Plaza Liverpool City Centre and consisted of meetings and networking opportunities designed to foster collaboration. A highlight of the visit was the Shandong-Liverpool Industrial Cooperation Dialogue, where senior representatives from both areas discussed potential partnerships spanning pharmaceuticals, ports and logistics, inward investment, maritime innovation, life sciences, and clean economic growth.
Liverpool’s existing ties with Shandong include commercial connections in the areas of port operations, logistics, sports, and advanced manufacturing. Educational and research collaborations also feature prominently; the University of Liverpool and Shandong First Medical University have established a Joint Research Lab focusing on Adverse Drug Reactions, which has secured more than £2 million in funding. Furthermore, beginning in 2025, 30 to 50 medical students from Shandong First Medical University will enroll annually at the University of Liverpool.
This visit underlines Liverpool’s ongoing engagement in international partnerships aimed at attracting investment, expanding trade, and boosting innovation to stimulate regional economic growth. Reflecting on the visit, Councillor Nick Small, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth, emphasized Liverpool’s long-standing tradition of being outward-looking and internationally connected. He stated: “This visit provides an important opportunity to build on existing relationships, create new connections and identify opportunities that can deliver long-term economic benefits for Liverpool, Shandong and our respective business communities.”
