According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), a misunderstanding led to a group of people reaching the floor of the hotel where the Pakistan under-19 cricket team was staying. Protesters had mistakenly believed that the team members were migrants, which sparked the confusion. This incident occurred at the Marriot Hotel in Cosham, Portsmouth, where roughly 30 to 40 individuals gathered on Tuesday evening after incorrect rumors spread about a coach carrying migrants arriving at the location.
Sumair Syed, the chief operating officer of the PCB, explained that team members reported people knocking on their hotel room doors during the episode. Despite the disturbance, Syed noted that the players remained calm and did not escalate the situation. Hampshire Police investigated the matter and confirmed that no offenses had been committed, with the group dispersing around 9:00 pm BST.
The following day, the Pakistan under-19 team proceeded with their scheduled match as planned, according to Syed. He described the incident as unfortunate but emphasized that he had been in communication with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which reassured them that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure security for the team’s escort.
Syed underscored the broader responsibility of the sporting community to safeguard visiting teams, stating, “This is the responsibility of the whole sport to ensure the safety, security and well-being of the visiting team.” He expressed hope that such incidents would be avoided in the future, highlighting the measures already being undertaken to protect players
