The funeral for one of the two police officers who lost their lives in a tragic wrong-way collision is scheduled to take place soon. PC Matthew Blades, aged 37, and PC Tom Clough, aged 38, died when a Volkswagen Passat crashed into their clearly marked armed response vehicle on the A66 at South Bank, near Middlesbrough, on August 22. Alongside the officers, five young men also died in the incident.
Local authorities have announced that road closures will be implemented in Hartlepool starting from 07:30 BST to accommodate a full police ceremonial funeral in honor of PC Blades. The closure is part of the arrangements to respectfully mark the officer’s passing. Lauren Somerville, chair of the Cleveland Police Federation and speaking for Blades’ family, expressed the profound silence left behind by the loss of the father of two, stating that “life feels unbearably quiet” without his “silly jokes” and laughter.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), officers had been tracking the Passat for nearly seven minutes following its suspected involvement in earlier criminal activity. However, the pursuit was called off approximately 10 seconds before the crash occurred as the vehicle entered the dual carriageway. The IOPC further explained that PC Blades and PC Clough were in a separate vehicle searching for the Passat after its cloned registration plates triggered an automated number plate recognition camera, and they were not engaged in the pursuit at the time of the collision.
Tragically, the crash also claimed the lives of five young men: 17-year-olds Cole Worthy and Theo Rae, 18-year-old Makai Saddington, and two men aged 23, Michael Cahill and Jakub Matusiak. The incident marks a sorrowful moment for the community and law enforcement alike
