Sir Tom Jones has revealed that ITV effectively “fired” him from his role as a judge on The Voice, expressing that he did not want to leave because he “loves the show.” The 86-year-old singer, originally from Treforest in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has been involved with the popular singing competition intermittently since its debut in 2012.
Rumors had circulated about his potential absence from the next series, and Sir Tom confirmed that the decision was made some time ago, though he was only informed recently. He shared on social media that ITV had proposed a diminished role for him, which he described as something he was “not thrilled” about. According to his statement, this change was initially attributed to financial concerns related to insurance.
In his post, Sir Tom explained, “They now say in the press they wanted to ‘refresh’ the show, and with a new coaching line-up there wouldn’t be a chair for me.” He went on to say that the producers offered him a “much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start.” Reflecting on the situation, he remarked, “So the only thing I know right now is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
While the show was preparing to start production on its 2027 series, a source close to the program told the Press Association that ITV remains eager to continue working with Sir Tom and hopes he will come back. During the latest season, Sir Tom joined fellow coaches including McFly members Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, American rapper Will.i.am, and Destiny’s Child vocalist Kelly Rowland. Over the years, he has worked alongside various well-known coaches such as Jessie J, Olly Murs, Kylie Minogue, and Rita Ora, and has successfully mentored three winners: Leanne Mitchell, Ruti Olajugbagbe, and Anthonia Edwards
