A barrister from West Yorkshire has been sentenced to over three years in prison for conspiring with her client, described by police as a “career criminal,” to carry out a retaliatory attack. Samreen Akhtar, aged 38 and residing on Sufton Street in Huddersfield, had served as legal counsel for Tabish Ali, who was wounded in a shooting incident on Blacker Road in Huddersfield on September 14, 2021.
The day after the shooting, authorities revealed that Akhtar was captured on a phone call advising Ali on a plan to locate the individual responsible for the attack so they could be seriously harmed. West Yorkshire Police stated that this demonstrated her involvement beyond professional boundaries, engaging in criminal activity. She was subsequently found guilty of encouraging or assisting a serious felony—in this case, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.
At Manchester Crown Court on Monday, Akhtar received a prison sentence of three years and three months. The case highlighted the troubling nature of her actions given her role within the legal system and her breach of trust by participating in violent plans.
Details from the police disclosed that Ali was affiliated with a drug gang and had previously been charged with the murder of Jamal Nedd. Nedd was fatally shot outside his home in Huddersfield while driving his mother to work on December 19, 2020. Ali, who lives on Clare Road in Cleckheaton, was charged in 2021, and in July 2022 was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment alongside two other men involved in the case
