A mural featuring England footballers Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers enjoying orange chips, a local specialty also known as battered chips, has been damaged. The painting was located on the side of the Classic Fryer chippy on Hagley Road in Quinton. Both players are originally from the Black Country, which the artwork highlighted.
Dudley-based artist Dion Kitson, who created the mural, shared a photograph on his Instagram showing that a significant portion of Bellingham’s image had been torn from the wall. Expressing his frustration to the BBC, Kitson said, “This is why we can’t have nice things, I spend my own money, time and resources creating art for people to enjoy.” Despite his disappointment, he added with humor, “It’s sad to see, I’m upset but as Cod is my witness, I’m planning something bigger and batter.”
The mural was unveiled just prior to the World Cup quarter-final in July, drawing attention to the footballers’ local roots. Following the vandalism, many on social media encouraged Kitson to make an even larger piece. Some also proposed that a new mural could be created in Jude Bellingham’s hometown of Stourbridge.
