Buckingham Palace has confirmed that the Prince of Wales will be present at the funeral of King Harald V of Norway, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday in Oslo. In addition to the Prince of Wales attending on behalf of his father, King Charles, Princess Anne will also attend in a personal capacity. She holds the role of godmother to the new Norwegian monarch, King Haakon VIII.
King Harald V, who passed away last month at the age of 89, was a widely respected and progressive king. He reigned over Norway for 35 years and was known for his popularity among the people. The prince’s attendance at the funeral adheres to the tradition that a reigning monarch typically does not attend the funeral of another head of state.
The funeral ceremonies are expected to draw large crowds in Oslo on September 9. The proceedings will include a funeral procession followed by a service at Oslo Cathedral. In the days leading up to the funeral, thousands of mourners have queued to pay their respects during the king’s lying in state at the chapel of the Royal Palace in Oslo.
Joining Prince William at the funeral will be Queen Sonja, as well as other members of the Norwegian royal family, including King Haakon VIII. Several European royals will also be present to honor the late king. After the public service, a private burial will be held at Norway’s royal mausoleum located within Akershus Fortress
