British actor Tim Curry passed away due to coronary artery disease, according to a statement from his spokesperson given to the BBC. The beloved performer, best known for his role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, died at his home in Los Angeles on August 25 at the age of 80. The official death certificate from Los Angeles County also listed stroke and kidney cancer as major contributing factors to his passing.
Curry, who gained international recognition as the flamboyant Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Show, drew tributes from many colleagues in the entertainment industry. After sustaining a nearly fatal stroke in 2012, he became wheelchair-bound but remained active in voice acting. He spoke about his survival and ongoing recovery in his memoir Vagabond, released the previous year, expressing gratitude that his speech remained unaffected despite the paralysis.
Reflecting on his experience, Curry told People magazine, “If there was anything impressed upon me in the aftermath, it was just how remarkable it was that I was still alive.” Fellow actors also shared their memories of him. Michael McKean, who worked with Curry on the 1985 film Clue, acknowledged the actor’s difficult health conditions in later years, describing his physical state as “grim.” Susan Sarandon, Curry’s co-star from Rocky Horror, called him “funny, sexy, original” and noted how kind he remained to fans, even while using a wheelchair.
Timothy James Curry was born in Warrington, England, in 1946. He began his acting career after university, initially performing in the 1968 London production of Hair. His connection to Richard O’Brien, a fellow cast member, led to him auditioning for the role in The Rocky Horror Show, which launched his career to new heights. Curry’s notable roles extended beyond Rocky Horror, including the chilling portrayal of Pennywise in the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It, as well as characters in Spamalot, Annie, Home Alone 2, The Hunt For Red October, and Scary Movie 2
