Michael Sheen, the actor originally from Port Talbot, has expressed his belief that the people of Wales should be consulted about reclaiming the title of Prince of Wales when it next becomes available. Currently held by Prince William, Sheen described the title as a symbol representing a historical slight against Wales. Although those events took place centuries ago, he emphasized that the significance of the title still resonates today.
Sheen’s comments come as he prepares to portray Owain Glyndŵr, known as the last Welsh-born Prince of Wales, in a new theatrical production at Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre. The title of Prince of Wales, traditionally granted by the reigning monarch to the heir apparent, has a complex and often contentious history. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, King Charles III bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales upon William and Catherine.
The history behind the title is marked by conflict and conquest. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd was the last independent Welsh prince before English forces seized control, resulting in his death in 1282 and the grim display of his head in London. The title was then given to the son of King Edward I, and later challenged by Glyndŵr, who led a 15-year Welsh rebellion before English reconquest. Glyndŵr remains an important symbol of Welsh nationalism, commemorated by numerous statues, pubs, and place names across the country.
In discussing the upcoming play *Owain & Henry,* which Sheen will co-direct and star in, he reflected on how learning more about Welsh history has reshaped his understanding of his identity. He hopes the production will inspire dialogue, including reexamining why the Prince of Wales title is not held by a Welsh-born individual. Sheen suggested that while the Welsh could decide to let the tradition continue unchanged, he feels it would be respectful and empowering to ask the people of Wales for their opinion.
