Canada has become the first Commonwealth nation outside the United Kingdom to feature the King on its currency since his accession to the throne. The new banknote also showcases a floral and leafy design, which the Bank of Canada states is “inspired by the King’s lifetime dedication to the environment.”
During the unveiling, Liberal MP and secretary of state for the Canada Revenue Agency Wayne Long emphasized that the symbols on the note “serve as a powerful reminder of who we are as a nation and what we value.” The central bank noted that some elements of the banknote’s design were developed in collaboration with an Indigenous advisory council.
This $20 banknote represents Canada’s second vertical banknote, the first being the $10 bill, which features civil rights activist Viola Desmond. The $10 note was internationally recognized, winning the best banknote design award in 2018 from the International Bank Note Society. According to Macklem, the new $20 bill is expected to enter circulation early next year.
Public opinion polls indicate that a considerable number of Canadians support severing formal ties with the British monarchy, especially within the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec. Despite this, the monarchy experienced a slight increase in popularity amid rising tensions between Canada and the United States, including trade disputes and former US President Donald Trump’s comments about making Canada the “51st state.” In May, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited the King to officially open Canada’s parliament, a gesture Carney described as one that “clearly underscores the sovereignty of our country.” The King serves as Canada’s head of state and is represented in the country by Governor General Louise Arbour
