A 35-year-old woman tragically lost her life due to heatstroke while climbing the highest peak in Wales, an inquest revealed. Sophie Goodyer-Bird, who hailed from Birmingham, was ascending Yr Wyddfa—commonly referred to as Snowdon—on July 10, shortly after celebrating her birthday.
During her descent, Goodyer-Bird reportedly grew increasingly fatigued. The inquest, which began at Caernarfon Coroners’ Court on Wednesday, detailed that near the conclusion of her walk, she became unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead soon thereafter.
Coroner Kate Robertson spoke about the incident, noting that medical teams performed CPR upon arriving but were unable to revive Sophie. The initial cause of death was identified as exertional heat stroke, though the inquest has been adjourned for a more comprehensive hearing to be held later.
