A semi-professional Welsh football team has expressed their astonishment after their kit was prominently worn during a headline performance at the Reading Festival. The frontman of the band Fontaines D.C., Grian Chatten, appeared on stage sporting the green and white away shirt of Cwmbran Celtic FC during their Friday set. This unexpected exposure has had a notable impact, with pre-orders for the shirt nearly doubling since the festival appearance.

Cwmbran Celtic shared their delight on social media, stating they were “still in shock and can’t thank Grian enough for the support.” The club’s shirt sales contribute not only to their team but also help support grassroots music venues. For the 2026/27 season, Cwmbran Celtic has collaborated with several well-known bands, including Welsh groups Super Furry Animals and Panic Shack, as well as Loose Articles and Mogwai. Notably, Mogwai is featured as a sponsor on the shirt worn by Chatten during the festival show.

Commenting on the shirt choice, Chatten spoke to BBC Wales, saying: “I love Cwmbran and I love initiatives that support independent venues. Cwmbran Celtic is a club run by volunteers who have a sense of solidarity with the plight independent music venues are facing. I think that’s class. Also I love Mogwai.” Matt Jarrett, joint commercial manager of the club, explained the connection came through a friend who works as the monitor engineer for Fontaines D.C. This friend arranged for a size 3XL shirt to be sent to Chatten.

Jarrett admitted they never anticipated that someone outside the bands featured on their kits would wear the shirt on stage. “In all honesty, we thought we’ll give it to him. It’ll be nice for him to have it. Maybe he will wear it backstage or something,” he said. However, Chatten surprised everyone by performing the headlining set wearing the shirt in front of tens of thousands of festival attendees and a wide audience via broadcasts. Jarrett described how the response has been “crazy” since the show, noting the surge in pre-sale orders and the enthusiasm from Fontaines fans. Additionally, 10% of the profits from shirt sales will be donated to the Music Venues Trust, further supporting grassroots music initiatives
