Authorities in northern Pakistan have confirmed the discovery of the body of a British trekker who went missing during a descent from a mountain. Alexander Harris, originally from Birmingham, disappeared last Saturday while coming down from the summit of Musa Ka Musala, a peak rising over 4,000 meters (approximately 13,000 feet) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. His body was located along a forest path, with local officials suggesting that he likely slipped and fell.
Harris, aged 30, had been residing in Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, where he worked for the advisory firm Adam Smith International. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office expressed that they are providing support to Harris’s family and are maintaining communication with local authorities regarding the incident. The trek began early in the morning at about 05:40 local time, with Harris and a hiking partner reaching the summit before beginning their descent and becoming separated when Harris moved ahead by one to two kilometers.
Deputy Commissioner Khalid Iqbal highlighted that roughly 250 to 300 people, including police officers and volunteers, took part in the extensive search effort. This involved ground personnel and drone assistance, although poor weather conditions such as rain and limited visibility restricted the use of drones. Harris was known locally as an enthusiastic hiker and trail runner, actively participating in long-distance races throughout Pakistan. According to Iqbal, the two trekkers had not informed authorities about their expedition, rejecting offers of guidance and police security as Harris was familiar with the local terrain.
In a statement, Adam Smith International described Harris as a “much loved member” of their team who had a strong affection for Pakistan and its people, even learning Urdu during his time there. The company expressed profound gratitude toward the numerous individuals involved in the search, including local residents, various rescue teams, the forest department, Harris’s running community, and the Pakistani government. They praised their tireless efforts amid challenging conditions marked by heavy rain, fog, and difficult terrain.
