British singer Kyla’s 2008 garage track “Do You Mind” has been named TikTok’s UK song of the summer, experiencing a remarkable revival on the social media platform. Originally released over a decade ago, the song gained widespread international recognition in 2016 when Canadian rapper Drake sampled it for his hit single “One Dance.” This summer, the track gained renewed popularity on TikTok, appearing in around 650,000 videos across the UK and amassing over 500 million views.
Kyla, who co-wrote the song with her husband DJ Paleface, described the resurgence as both “surreal” and “incredible.” She reflected on the earlier success linked to Drake’s version, saying, “Back in 2016, even though it had all that success, it still felt like: ‘Oh, it’s because you’re with Drake.’ So you don’t always feel validated.” However, with the current surge, Kyla feels a stronger personal connection to the track’s renewed popularity: “I think this time around it was like: ‘Well this is actually me.’” The artist recently joined singer Jorja Smith at the All Points East festival in London to perform “Do You Mind” live, an experience she called “incredible” and emotionally overwhelming as she heard thousands singing along.
The TikTok trend has seen the track used in a variety of creative ways, from lip-syncing clips to outfit reveals. Kyla expressed particular fondness for videos that play on the song’s lyrics “baby” and “honey,” often featuring dolls and real honey as props. This resurgence is part of a broader revival of UK garage music, with contemporary artists such as Sammy Virji, AJ Tracey, and Disclosure incorporating garage influences into their music. Alongside Kyla’s track, other garage-influenced songs like Silva Bumpa’s “On 2nite” and Prospa and Cloonee’s “Free Your Mind” have also charted on TikTok.
Nostalgia for older music tracks has proven widespread on TikTok this summer beyond “Do You Mind.” Oasis’s 1995 classic “Wonderwall” became the second most popular UK song of the summer on the platform, propelled by singalongs tied to England’s World Cup campaign. Interest surged dramatically, with the song featuring in over 300,000 videos and climbing to number two on the singles chart. The band’s “Champagne Supernova” also made it into TikTok’s UK top 10. Globally, Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away,” originally released in 2011, was named TikTok’s worldwide song of the summer.
