A man has been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder following an incident in which another man fell from a balcony. According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), emergency services responded to reports of the fall at residential flats on Liverpool Street in Salford shortly after midnight on Saturday. The injured man was promptly transported to hospital and remains in a critical condition due to life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, a man in his twenties, is currently being questioned by police. GMP confirmed that the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because the two individuals involved had previous interactions with the police. A blue forensic tent has been set up at the scene near the intersection of Liverpool Street and Southern Street as investigations continue.
A local resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, described hearing sirens during the night and witnessing the incident being broadcast live on social media. She said, “I heard all the sirens, but I keep myself to myself so I didn’t go out. I’ve seen it’s all cordoned off and there’s a blue forensics tent. It’s sad, it’s really sad. It’s a bit close to home.”
Ch Insp Lee Gridley provided an update on the investigation, stating, “A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and he is currently being questioned in custody. Our officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances, and a scene will remain in place whilst the investigation continues. We understand that incidents of this nature may cause concern within the community, however we believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public.” Additionally, an IOPC spokesperson confirmed their involvement, explaining that they are in assessment mode following notification of previous police contact with the individuals involved and will review the referral from GMP as appropriate
