The chairperson of the Parades Commission, Professor Evelyn Collins, has confirmed that neither she nor her fellow commissioners plan to resign from their positions. This statement came shortly after a court ruling exposed errors made by the commission regarding last month’s planned Orange Order parade to Drumcree church in Portadown.
Despite calls from unionist parties and the Orange Order demanding the commission’s resignation, Professor Collins emphasized their commitment to remain in office. She expressed a determination to “work hard to regain the trust of all sections of the community.” In an interview on Good Morning Ulster, Collins further clarified, “Rather than resign, the commissioners and I are very committed to fulfilling our responsibilities under the legislation, to completing our terms of office and to addressing and fixing the problems that have been identified.” She also acknowledged that criticisms levied against the commission have been accepted.
Nigel Dawson, who serves as the Portadown District Master for the Orange Order, expressed his disbelief at Collins’ remarks during an appearance on The Nolan Show. He insisted that her resignation is necessary, describing her position as “untenable” and emphasizing that she “must take responsibility.” Dawson criticized the commission’s credibility, stating, “They don’t command, I think, the confidence of the greater unionist community,” and argued that the commission is “no longer fit for purpose.” He also claimed that the reputations of the commissioners “are in tatters” and challenged their independence.
In response to these concerns, Dawson has reached out to the Secretary of State, Sir Chris Bryant, seeking a meeting to discuss the situation further.
