In a significant early morning operation, Steven ‘Bonzo’ Daniel, aged 46, was apprehended by police at his residence in Robroyston, located in the northern part of Glasgow. Daniel is reputed to lead the Daniel crime family, a group that has been entrenched in a violent rivalry with the Lyons family for a quarter of a century. The arrest forms part of the wider crackdown known as Operation Venetic, a comprehensive UK-wide initiative targeting serious and organized crime, including firearms and drug-related offenses.
BBC Scotland News was present as the operation unfolded shortly before dawn. Officers convened at a nearby station to receive instructions before traveling together to Daniel’s home. Two uniformed officers made initial contact by speaking to him through a first-floor window. Subsequently, a police officer accompanied by a dog approached the property. Shortly after, Daniel exited through the main entrance and was immediately detained, being placed in the back of a police van.
In a coordinated effort occurring simultaneously less than four miles away in Garthamlock, a second individual named Steven Gordon, 39, was also arrested. His detention is connected to charges involving serious and organized crime, firearms and drug offenses, as well as conspiracy to murder. The dual arrests underscore the scale and coordination of the enforcement activities under Operation Venetic.
Assistant Chief Constable Dave Ferry emphasized the authorities’ determination, stating, “The chief constable has made it clear that those intent on being involved in serious and organised crime will be brought to justice.” He further noted that the operation demonstrates a firm commitment to pursuing criminals relentlessly, utilizing all available tactics to protect Scottish communities from the damages inflicted by such illegal activities. Since 2020, Scotland’s involvement in Operation Venetic has led to over 60 arrests, following the National Crime Agency’s breakthrough in accessing a covert criminal communication network. It is noteworthy that Daniel himself was previously seriously injured in 2017 during a high-speed police chase through Glasgow
