Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will embark on a royal tour of the Caribbean later this year. The itinerary includes attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, as well as visits to the Bahamas and Guyana. This journey is scheduled to take place from October 27 to November 4 and is intended to honor the diverse communities, cultures, and natural heritage within the Commonwealth.
This upcoming trip will be King Charles III’s first visit to the Caribbean since 2021. During that trip, he traveled to Barbados for the momentous event when the country formally removed Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch to become a republic. At that time, then-Prince of Wales delivered a speech acknowledging the “appalling atrocity of slavery” experienced by the Caribbean nation.
In addition to his recent Caribbean visits, King Charles has a long history of engagements in the region. He traveled to Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 after the islands were severely impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. His earlier visits include official trips to Guyana in 2000 and the Bahamas in 1973. Furthermore, earlier this year, he made a royal visit to Bermuda, a British overseas territory where he also holds the position of head of state. This marked his first official trip as monarch to any British overseas territory and followed a state visit to the United States.
The forthcoming tour highlights the ongoing relationship between the British monarchy and the Commonwealth nations, reflecting a commitment to celebrating their shared history and cultural ties.
