Belfast City Airport is pursuing approval to extend its evening flight operations from the current 21:30 BST deadline to 22:30 as part of an extensive expansion initiative. In addition to later operating hours, the airport aims to raise the annual flight movement cap by 27%, increasing it from 48,000 to 61,000 flights per year.
Implementing these changes will require a formal amendment to the airport’s existing legally binding Planning Agreement. Ultimately, the decision on these proposals is expected to be made by the infrastructure minister. However, it is anticipated that there could be resistance from local community groups and environmental advocates who may oppose the increase in activity and extended hours.
Matthew Hall, the CEO of Belfast City Airport, emphasized the necessity of these adjustments to accommodate the projected rise in air travel demand. He stated, “The proposed changes would provide the operational flexibility required to facilitate airline schedules and future route development, while continuing to operate within a framework that recognises the importance of balancing growth with our commitment to being a responsible neighbour.”
