After a recent power outage, National Rail provided an update at 18:13 BST indicating that the CrossCountry service connecting Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport is expected to operate on Sunday evening. Additionally, the operator has managed to restart an hourly train service running between Birmingham New Street, Leicester, and Derby.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed her relief regarding the situation, stating, “Following earlier disruption on CrossCountry services, I am pleased to hear some trains are set to run tonight, and a full timetable expected to resume tomorrow.” She also advised passengers to keep checking their travel plans while expressing gratitude to the engineers working diligently to reduce the impact of the disruption.
Alexander further highlighted plans for the future management of the rail network, noting, “We are setting up Great British Railways and nationalising services, including Cross Country next year, to end decades of fragmentation and vulnerability on our network. We are determined to give passengers the reliability they deserve.” This move reflects efforts to create a more cohesive and dependable rail system.
In response to the recent problems, the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) has called for a thorough review of railway operational control centres to ensure they are protected against power failures.
