A 19-year-old from South Sudan has admitted to endangering others during a sea voyage after he piloted a dinghy carrying a record number of migrants across the English Channel to the UK. Chan Mathok Atak pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court for his role in the crossing that took place on 23 July.
Rescue teams described their shock at seeing just how many individuals were tightly packed into the dinghy, which was reportedly about the same length as a bus. The inflatable vessel began deflating while navigating one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, raising serious safety concerns.
The prosecution argued that Atak’s actions placed those on board at significant risk of death or serious injury. The charge of endangerment at sea is a relatively new offence, designed to prosecute individuals accused of steering small boats across the Channel.
At the time of this incident, the dinghy set a record for the largest group of arrivals in a single vessel on the south coast, a figure later exceeded by a “mega dinghy” earlier this month that carried 230 people. Chan Mathok Atak is scheduled to be sentenced on 11 September
