Becki Barratt, a health and fitness coach from Chester, never expected to hear the words “you’ve had a stroke” at just 33 years old. Tragically, this occurred only three weeks after the birth of her second child, while she was breastfeeding at home. Instead of cherishing those early days with her newborn son Beauden, Becki found herself coping with paralysis affecting the left side of her body. She lives with her husband James, her daughter Aréya, and her new baby son.
Reflecting on the moment she realized something was wrong, Becki described how her hand began to spasm unexpectedly. Holding Beauden, she called out urgently for help. “I could feel them giving way beneath me. I slowly collapsed to the floor while still holding Beau,” she recalled. By the time she arrived at Countess of Chester Hospital, she had lost movement in her left arm and leg, unable to walk or stand.
The stroke not only caused profound physical challenges but also took a heavy emotional toll. Becki spoke about the difficulty of losing precious early moments with her baby and the overwhelming feelings of helplessness. “A part of motherhood was taken away from me. I felt lost. I felt alone. I felt completely useless to my children and my husband,” she said. Determined to recover, Becki focused on the mindset of controlling her response to the situation, saying, “The only way out is through.”
Medical professionals continue to investigate the cause of Becki’s stroke, which she found unimaginable for someone young and healthy. She noted, “Stroke doesn’t discriminate. In a single moment, my entire life changed.” Looking ahead, Becki plans to run the London Marathon in 2027, inspired by watching the race from her hospital bed. Juliet Bouverie OBE, CEO of the Stroke Association, emphasized the importance of Becki’s story, reminding us that strokes can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness, and that pregnancy is a recognized period of increased risk due to factors like high blood pressure and blood clots
