Following a period of showery conditions earlier this week, much of the UK is set to experience bright and sunny weather this weekend thanks to a strong high pressure system. Although temperatures during the day will feel comfortably warm, they remain well below the record highs seen earlier in the month. At night, mostly clear skies will lead to a marked difference between cool morning lows and warmer afternoon highs. Despite the dry spell over the weekend, unsettled weather is expected to return early next week.
Saturday will begin with a crisp and refreshing start as many places wake up to chilly temperatures. Morning lows in rural areas may drop to around 3°C, with larger cities seeing between 6°C and 9°C, reminiscent of early autumn rather than the end of August. These temperature variations are typical for this time of year, when swings between night and day can become more pronounced. By afternoon, northern regions should warm to approximately 18°C, while central and southern areas can expect highs in the low 20s Celsius, aligning with average temperatures for late August. The day should remain largely dry, although the Scottish Highlands might see a few isolated showers and some increased cloud cover.
Sunday promises to continue the trend of settled weather with mostly sunny skies and light winds. After another chilly start, the afternoon will bring pleasant warmth across much of the country. Southern and central parts will have scattered fair-weather clouds, while northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland may experience slightly more cloud but still largely bright conditions. Temperatures will rise a little compared to Saturday, particularly in the south, where highs around the mid-20s Celsius are forecast in places such as Southampton, Reading, and London.
However, this dry and settled weather is not expected to last beyond the weekend. Forecasts indicate the high pressure system will move eastward early next week, allowing low pressure to move in and bring spells of rain. Showers associated with a low pressure area drifting in from France could affect southern and southwestern parts of Britain from Monday night, with the potential to spread further north into Tuesday. From midweek onwards, heavier rain is anticipated, especially in western areas. Upland regions could receive 30-40mm of rain by the end of next week, while eastern parts of the country might see about half that amount
