Two men re-arrested after Wylam death of soldier Liam Potts

Two individuals have been taken back into custody on suspicion of manslaughter following the discovery of a soldier’s body in a river. The deceased has been identified as Liam Potts, aged 22, who served with the Coldstream Guards. His body was retrieved by Northumbria Police near Wylam Bridge on 18 August.

The police reported that prior to Potts’s disappearance in the early hours of 15 August, there were complaints about a disturbance at The Boathouse pub. Shortly afterward, a collision occurred on the bridge involving a car and a group of pedestrians. Authorities are currently examining whether these events are connected to the soldier entering the water. Two men, aged 22 and 23, have been re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter; both remain in custody.

During the collision, a man and a woman in their twenties were seriously injured but their injuries were not life-threatening. The woman has since been released from hospital, while the man continues to receive treatment. Police confirmed that Liam Potts was present on the bridge at the time of the incident but was neither a passenger in the vehicle nor struck by it. However, he entered the water shortly after the collision took place.

In a heartfelt tribute, Potts’s family expressed their sorrow and described him as “the heart and soul of any room.” They said, “We are going to miss your smile, your laugh, and the little things that made you who you are,” adding, “Though time may pass, the love we have for you will never fade.” The family also conveyed their gratitude to everyone who offered support and sympathy. They recognized the efforts of the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, Northumbria Police, and the police diving team, thanking them for their roles in the search and recovery operation
