Torfaen becomes global hotspot for carbon emissions after wildfires

A county in Wales experienced one of the highest levels of carbon emissions per square kilometre globally during July, a situation linked to wildfires, according to a charitable organization. The fire that occurred near Blaenavon in Torfaen was characterized by the local fire service as “one of the largest and most challenging” events in recent years for South Wales. This extensive blaze burnt across an area roughly equivalent to 300 football pitches on Mynydd Garnclochdy, situated between Abersychan and Blaenavon. The smoke from the fire was reported as far away as Cardiff, nearly 30 miles from the source.

Save the Children expressed concerns about the potential health impacts stemming from the wildfire smoke, especially on vulnerable populations. They referenced data released by the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, which noted that in July, Torfaen ranked behind locations such as Malanje in Angola, Ávila in Spain, and Annaba in Algeria for wildfire emissions. Despite this, the Torfaen council stated they were not previously informed of this EU data. Their own air quality monitoring systems had detected “elevated particulate concentrations” during the wildfire period.

The wildfire in Torfaen, along with others in the region, contributed to a major incident declaration that ultimately necessitated military intervention for containment. Blaenavon councillor Janet Jones reported that the smoke’s presence was “particularly bad” on August 13, approximately three weeks after the fire began. Jones highlighted worries regarding air quality, especially for elderly residents and individuals suffering from respiratory illnesses such as emphysema and COPD. While she had consulted with local GP practice nurses and was not aware of any rise in respiratory complaints at the time, she acknowledged that these effects “could change in the months ahead.”

Melanie Simmonds, head of Save the Children Wales, underscored the risks to children exposed to wildfire smoke, extreme heat, and reduced opportunities for outdoor play. She said, “In Wales and across the world, children are breathing in smoke from wildfires, coping with extreme heat and losing the freedom to play outdoors because the air is no longer safe. These conditions are not only frightening – they carry serious health consequences for children whose bodies and lungs are still developing.” In response, Torfaen council reiterated their ongoing commitment to air quality monitoring through their station in Croesyceiliog Cwmbran but emphasized that their instruments primarily track general background air quality rather than conditions immediately next to fire sites. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, part of the EU space programme providing environmental data related to air pollution and health, described the emissions from Torfaen’s wildfire as “extremely unusual.
