Reflecting on the accident, Tom’s mother, Danni, described the experience as “such a horrific time for all of us.” She revealed that there were moments when she feared they might not get through the ordeal. Despite these fears, she praised her son’s resilience and determination, qualities that have helped both of them endure the difficult journey.
Danni admitted she often finds herself amazed by Tom’s strength, saying, “Sometimes I still look at him and think, ‘how has he done this?’. How has he not just crumbled? I am just in awe of him.” Her admiration highlights the remarkable way Tom has confronted such life-altering circumstances.
Less than a year after becoming blind, Tom is already setting ambitious goals. He is preparing to take part in the 2027 London Marathon, with his mother serving as his guide. Tom recalled the moment when the idea of running the marathon was first mentioned: “I was in active recovery. I was in the car and had not been out of the house in weeks. And then she [Danni] just dropped it on me in the car.”
The marathon will be a fundraising effort in support of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), a charity Tom credited as “absolutely amazing.” Early on, he admitted to struggling to find help because he didn’t know where to turn. After reaching out to RNIB for mental health support, he quickly received assistance. “In the space of a week I think I got given eight weeks of therapy,” he said.
