Two men jailed for violent disorder at asylum hotel in Epping

Two men have been sentenced to prison terms exceeding two years following their involvement in protests outside an asylum hotel in Essex during the summer of 2025. The disturbances occurred at the Bell Hotel in Epping, where a large and hostile crowd gathered after one of the migrants residing there was charged with sexual assault, as stated at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Jonathan Glover, aged 47 from Springfields, Waltham Abbey, received a prison sentence of two years and six months for his role in violent disorder. Meanwhile, Charlie Land, 24, from Warren Close in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, was sentenced to two years and eight months after being convicted of both violent disorder and criminal damage. Land showed visible emotion during sentencing, sobbing in the courtroom. Both men were found guilty following a trial held in June.

The court heard that Glover had initially attended the protest “reluctantly” alongside his partner. However, Judge Mills remarked that Glover was actually deeply involved in the unrest, dismissing his claims of being a journalist. Video evidence presented during the trial showed Glover confronting police officers and recording them with his phone. In one encounter, he was pushed back by an officer wielding a riot shield, an altercation that resulted in Glover losing two teeth. The judge emphatically stated that genuine journalists document events without inciting violence and that Glover had instead inflamed tensions throughout the disorder.

Charlie Land was identified as having caused significant damage to police vehicles, including punching windows, damaging wing mirrors, and deflating tires. Trial footage depicted him wearing a face covering while climbing onto a police vehicle and kicking its windscreen. The judge condemned Land as an active and enthusiastic participant in the violent disorder, noting his disregard for police safety and the intimidating effect of his mask. Although Land had several previous convictions, the judge acknowledged his immaturity but held him responsible for the “mindless violence” he engaged in. As both men left the courtroom, Land called out to his parents, expressing his love for them.

These two men are among several who have been sentenced for their participation in the violence on 17 July 2025. They represent the ninth and tenth individuals sentenced, with eight having received jail terms. Earlier, Phillip Curson from Upminster was imprisoned for 27 months for assaulting a police officer during the disorder. Other protesters received jail sentences or suspended terms in the months prior, including Lee Gower and Shaun Thompson from Epping, as well as Aaron Elles from Harlow and Luke Fleming from Buckhurst Hill
