Andy Burnham has declared receiving a total of £345,000 in donations during the past year, with £164,347 coming from businessman Lord Sainsbury. These contributions are detailed in the latest edition of the MPs’ register of interests, marking Burnham’s first financial disclosures since his election to Parliament in June.
In addition to the monetary donations, Burnham has reported various instances of hospitality and gifts he accepted in the year before his parliamentary return. These included invitations to high-profile events such as Glastonbury Festival, Lancashire Cricket Club matches, and visits to the Aintree Racecourse.
A spokesperson for the Labour Party stated, “It’s right that political campaigns are funded by the generous support of party donors, rather than via the public purse,” emphasizing that all declarations comply with Parliamentary and Electoral Commission rules. New MPs must register all relevant financial interests and any significant benefits received in the twelve months prior to election within a month of taking office.
Lord Sainsbury’s donations specifically supported Burnham’s bid to become Labour leader. Additional funding came from businessman Gary Lubner with £25,000 and Sacha Lord, former Greater Manchester night-time economy tsar, who contributed £35,000. Other donations included £50,000 from the TV production company Charlie Parsons Creative and £22,186 from the think tank ThinkLabour, previously called Labour Together. The campaign funding covered a range of expenses such as office space, IT support, staffing, polling, travel, social media, and message testing.
Donations totaling £20,000 from trade unions including Unison, the Communications Workers Union, and the Fire Brigades Union were directed towards Burnham’s mayoral campaigning efforts. Additionally, Labour peer Lord Blunkett donated £2,000 to support Burnham’s campaign for the Makerfield parliamentary seat.
During his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham accepted a variety of gifts and hospitality. These included four tickets to Glastonbury, where he was a speaker, given by festival organisers, along with £1,000 for accommodation from the campaign group PRS for Music. Sony Music Entertainment provided tickets valued at £3,800 to the Brit Awards in Manchester. The Jockey Club Racecourse gifted two tickets worth £500 for the Aintree Racecourse, and Lancashire Cricket Club offered two tickets valued at £458 to a game in The Hundred tournament. Burnham also received a hamper basket and a Wedgewood tea set worth £340 from the ambassador of Qatar.
In 2024, shortly after becoming prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer faced controversy over gifts he had accepted, which included tickets to a Taylor Swift concert and clothing valued at thousands of pounds. Following public scrutiny, he reimbursed over £6,000 worth of gifts and hospitality and introduced stricter regulations. These new rules require serving ministers to carefully consider the importance of maintaining public confidence in the propriety of accepting gifts
