Following this, there is soil moisture drought, a phase that impacts agriculture by depleting water stored in the soil. The soil acts like a reservoir, losing moisture due to plant consumption and evaporation intensified by heat. River flow drought occurs next, as water levels in rivers decrease. If dry conditions continue, groundwater and reservoir levels drop as well, leading to more severe consequences. However, Dr. Facer-Childs points out that the drought has not yet escalated to severe levels affecting groundwater and reservoirs, offering a degree of optimism.
Data from the British Geological Survey supports this outlook, indicating that no groundwater sites in the UK are currently experiencing record low levels, with nearly half of these locations maintaining normal groundwater conditions. Typically, the situation becomes clearer by late autumn and winter, as increased rainfall during these seasons allows experts to monitor whether water is replenishing underground aquifers.
Dr. Kevin Collins, a senior lecturer at The Open University, notes that despite the arrival of autumn rains, many people mistakenly believe the drought has ended after only short periods of rain. Instead, significant and sustained precipitation over several months is necessary to refill aquifers and reservoirs. Hydrologists usually determine by February or March if recovery has occurred, yet the ecological effects of drought can persist for years. Professor Tim Palmer of Oxford University warns that if the UK experiences another dry winter, the situation could become “catastrophic” by next year. Although there are signs suggesting a wetter-than-average autumn across Europe, possibly linked to global oceanic changes like El Niño, the forecast remains uncertain.
