A press release from the Cabinet Office, announcing an emergency alert, was published on its website around 18:45 on Friday. However, this release went largely unnoticed by many media outlets, resulting in little advance warning for the public. This lack of notification raised concerns among some campaigners, who fear it may have put domestic abuse victims at risk, particularly those relying on hidden secondary phones to seek help or escape abusive situations.
Women’s Aid, a national charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, has called for improved advance notice of alerts wherever feasible. Veronica Oakeshott, the charity’s head of external affairs, emphasized the importance of these secondary devices remaining concealed. Speaking to BBC News, she said, “Survivors of domestic abuse frequently turn to second phones to help them access lifesaving support or flee from abuse.” Oakeshott urged the government to provide prior warning to the public when issuing alerts, stressing that such foreknowledge is vital.
According to a government spokesperson, there has been ongoing collaboration with domestic abuse organizations to test the alert system. Additionally, reports indicate that senior officials debated the decision to send the alert several hours ahead, during Friday morning. On a related note, Phil Garrigan, chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, thanked the public on Monday for their response to the emergency alert. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he noted a reduction in the number of wildfires attended by emergency services over the past three days but confirmed that four major incidents remained active in Hampshire, Cambridgeshire, South Wales, and the West Midlands.
The timing and presentation of the alert also sparked discussions among politicians. Laura Anne Jones of Reform UK and Andrew RT Davies of the Conservative Party questioned why the emergency alert appeared in Welsh before English. While the UK government did not provide a direct response to this query, it referenced the Welsh Language Act, which mandates that alerts be issued first in Welsh and, where possible, presented bilingually
