Stag put down after attacking man in Richmond Park

On Saturday, a man in his 60s sustained chest injuries after being attacked by a stag in Richmond Park. According to Royal Parks, the deer had approached the man’s picnic group in search of food, an incident that ultimately led to the animal being euthanized.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene in the south-west London park shortly after 18:16 BST following reports of the attack. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the injured man was transported to hospital, where medical staff determined his wounds were neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

In response to the incident, the charity responsible for maintaining London’s Royal Parks has issued a public advisory urging visitors to keep a distance of at least 50 meters (164 feet) from the wild deer. This warning comes amid an observed increase in people feeding animals in the parks, which can provoke unsafe interactions.

A spokesperson for Royal Parks commented on the situation: “We understand from the police that thankfully the injuries were not life-threatening. Sadly, the stag’s behaviour meant that it had to be put down as it was deemed to be a danger to visitors. If visitors follow our advice and do not feed or interfere with the deer, it is highly unlikely that they will exhibit this type of behaviour.” The stag was subsequently shot by a wildlife officer working for Royal Parks
