In anticipation of a speech scheduled for Monday by Reform’s shadow chancellor, Robert Jenrick, the party has revealed new details about its welfare policy proposals. Jenrick will use the address to officially present the party’s comprehensive plan regarding welfare reform.
Jenrick criticized the current system, stating, “Forcing British workers to pay for the benefits of foreigners is not just economically illiterate but plain immoral.” He emphasized the willingness of people to help those in their communities during difficult times but argued that it is unsustainable for British taxpayers to support individuals globally, particularly those who have not contributed to the system.
Government figures for this year indicate that welfare expenditure in Great Britain is projected to reach £322 billion, accounting for 10.6% of the country’s GDP. More than half of this amount is allocated to pensioners. Reform claims to have spent six months developing a detailed 50-page proposal that aims to reduce welfare spending by £50 billion annually.
As part of its reform agenda, the party has announced plans to overhaul the disability benefits system, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), if it wins the next general election. The latest suggestions include prohibiting foreign nationals from receiving nearly all welfare payments, such as housing benefit, pension credit, jobseeker’s allowance, child benefit, free childcare, and disability benefits. A few exceptions would remain, including war widows’ pensions and Armed Forces compensation. This builds on an earlier commitment to bar foreign nationals from claiming Universal Credit
