Jim Shannon: DUP MP charged with common assault of a woman

Jim Shannon, a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is facing charges related to common assault involving a woman. The incident in question is reported to have occurred on 1 October 2023. Shannon, aged 71, who is based at the DUP offices on Frances Street in Newtownards, did not appear at Newtownards Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

At the hearing, defence lawyer Conan Rea stated that a defence statement has already been filed on behalf of Shannon. The court was informed that the Public Prosecution Service intends to request amendments to the dates listed on their submitted documents. However, Rea indicated that the defence will oppose this application and has prepared a skeleton argument outlining their reasons for objection.

Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne was made aware of the defence’s formal objections during the session. With the prosecution expected to respond to these submissions, the judge decided to postpone the proceedings until 1 September. This adjournment allows both sides to address the issues raised over the paperwork amendments.
