A serious two-vehicle collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare has resulted in multiple deaths and injuries. The crash happened around 3:00 a.m. local time on Sunday at Junction 3, involving a head-on collision between two cars. According to Gardaí, one of the vehicles was traveling on the wrong side of the carriageway when the impact occurred, leading to several fatalities.
Among those injured, the driver and front passenger of the second vehicle, both women in their 30s, were transported to Tallaght University Hospital and remain in critical condition. Additionally, a female rear-seat passenger in her 20s was taken to St. Luke’s General Hospital, where her condition is described as serious. A child passenger from the same vehicle was rushed to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin, also in serious condition.
The M9 motorway, specifically the stretch between Junction 3 and Junction 4 in both directions, remains closed while local diversions are in effect. Gardaí have informed Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, about the incident. An on-call team from Fiosrú attended the scene promptly and has begun an independent investigation into the crash.
Fiosrú clarified that their involvement concerns incidents where a member of the public has died or sustained serious injury in the context of police contact. Their inquiry aims to determine whether any acts or omissions by Gardaí contributed to the outcome, but this does not imply any allegation of misconduct. Meanwhile, Gardaí are requesting witnesses to come forward, especially those traveling along the M9 between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. who might have dashcam footage to assist with the ongoing investigation
