An elderly woman, aged 84, managed to escape a devastating fire with her pet dog and budgie, leaving behind her cherished home as it was consumed by flames, according to her granddaughter. The blaze affected Paula Fenton’s bungalow located in Willenhall, West Midlands, where the fire spread rapidly through the gardens on the street. Firefighters were busy tackling several fires across the region on Thursday.
Jade Fenton, 32, shared the heartbreaking impact the fire had on her grandmother, who lost not only her home but nearly everything she owned. Precious items including hearing aids, jewellery, her wedding ring, and mementos of her late husband were all destroyed. “There’s nothing left of it,” Jade revealed, explaining that Paula had to leave the house wearing just her slippers and pyjamas.
The fire caused severe damage to three bungalows on Stonehouse Avenue, with two of these properties, including Paula’s, losing their roofs entirely. The incident is part of a larger pattern of fires in the area, notably one in Stourbridge, where 19 homes were destroyed. These widespread fires led to a government-issued alert, sent directly to millions of mobile phones on Friday, warning people to avoid lighting anything that could trigger further wildfires during the ongoing drought and heatwave.
