This eclipse will be visible in southern Spain, northern Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula, with particularly good viewing conditions expected in northern Africa due to typically clear skies. Dr Ed Bloomer, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, notes that while this eclipse won’t be prominent in the UK, it’s definitely worth preserving your glasses safely to prepare for future eclipses, including a partial solar eclipse expected in January 2028.

For those who don’t plan to use their glasses again, donating them is a thoughtful alternative. Dr Tonkin suggests reaching out to local schools, libraries, or science clubs that might put them to good use. Astronomical societies also often collect eclipse glasses to distribute at events, according to Dr Bloomer. These groups provide a fantastic way to extend the life of the glasses and help more people experience solar eclipses safely.

Another creative use involves repurposing the glasses for photography or educational activities. Modern camera technology, including smartphone cameras, can capture impressive images of solar phenomena when fitted with solar filter material cut from eclipse glasses. Dr Tonkin recommends mounting a piece of the filter over your phone’s camera lens to photograph sunspots and eclipses. However, Dr Bloomer advises caution to avoid prolonged exposure to the Sun’s UV rays, which can be harmful to both eyes and camera sensors. NASA also warns that capturing solar images with phone cameras can potentially damage their sensors, so care is needed when attempting this type of photography.
