Multiple fires erupted across the West Midlands, leading to the hospitalization of a child and three firefighters, as well as the evacuation of numerous residents. These incidents, which coincided with the UK’s hottest day of the year, prompted an overwhelming response from fire services dealing with intense demand throughout Thursday.
A significant blaze near Stourbridge Golf Course involved roughly 100 firefighters who combated flames rapidly spreading through dry grass and woodland, resulting in the destruction of six homes. In other parts of the region, four homes were lost in Stoke-on-Trent, a woman sustained serious injuries in a fire in Birmingham’s Castle Vale area, and a major incident was declared in Warwickshire due to another large fire.
Simon Tuhill, the region’s fire chief, described the situation as one of the most severe the service has faced, highlighting the extensive devastation caused. Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed sympathy for those affected, saying, “My thoughts are with everyone affected, particularly those who have been injured or forced from their homes, and with the firefighters who have been taken to hospital.” He also noted ongoing communication with local leaders and emergency teams. West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker characterized the situation as “extremely worrying and fast-moving,” emphasizing the rapid escalation of multiple fires.
The Stourbridge fire, which spanned approximately 40 acres and included several separate ignition points, resulted in six people being treated at the scene, with two hospitalized according to ambulance services. Residents living near the golf course were evacuated by police; one resident recalled being advised to wet fences and prepare to evacuate as the fire approached.
