A 78-year-old man sustained fatal injuries after being trampled by cattle on the grounds of a National Trust property, an inquest revealed. John Orton, a retired telecommunications engineer, was at Felbrigg Hall near Cromer in Norfolk when the incident occurred on 13 July. The assistant coroner for Norfolk, Maeve Sykes, confirmed that a post-mortem examination indicated “severe chest injuries” as the provisional cause of death.
Norfolk Police responded to an emergency call at the estate around 11:45 BST on the same day. Despite attempts to save him at the scene, John Orton was pronounced dead. Following the tragedy, Felbrigg Hall was temporarily closed to allow for investigations to be conducted. Authorities stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched their own inquiry.
A spokesperson representing the HSE said they are now leading the investigation into Mr. Orton’s death and expressed sympathy for his relatives and friends during the difficult period. Meanwhile, the National Trust expressed their shock and sorrow over the loss, stating: “We have been left shocked and deeply saddened by the death of a visitor who was seriously injured while walking at Felbrigg last month.” They also noted that due to the ongoing investigation, they could not provide additional comments at this time but extended their condolences to the family.
The coroner’s inquest into the incident has been postponed to take place next year. The investigation continues as officials seek to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event
