A nationwide government alert has been issued across England and Wales, cautioning the public against lighting anything that could potentially trigger wildfires. This warning followed a major blaze in Stourbridge, West Midlands, which rapidly spread through grassland and woodland, ultimately destroying 19 homes and damaging another 18 on Thursday.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the seriousness of the situation, urging people to heed the alert, which was initiated at the request of firefighting teams. Simon Tuhill, Chief Fire Officer for West Midlands Fire Service, described the Stourbridge fire as one of the most severe emergencies the service has ever encountered.
Multiple fires were actively being fought across England and Wales on Friday. In Hampshire, firefighters continued to battle a New Forest wildfire for the sixth consecutive day after it began on Sunday. Meanwhile, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service attended to sixteen incidents on Thursday afternoon, including a blaze at Mousehold Heath in Norwich.
The West Midlands also faced significant fire outbreaks elsewhere. In Birmingham areas such as Warstock and Kings Norton suffered extensive damage, with a 55-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. In Stoke-on-Trent’s Sandyford, four homes were destroyed and several others damaged on Thursday; two individuals were arrested in connection with arson, while six firefighters were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. Additionally, fires on Stonehouse Avenue and Harry Perks Street in Willenhall led to the destruction of at least three homes and several gardens.
Authorities are collaborating across emergency services to determine the cause of the Stourbridge fire, maintaining an open mind about the investigation.
