A Birmingham city councillor affiliated with the Green Party has been formally charged with assaulting a member of the public, three police officers, and a police staff member. Siobhan Harper-Nunes, aged 66, was taken into custody following an incident at the intersection of Monument Road and Hagley Road in Birmingham, which occurred around 5 p.m. BST on Thursday.
Harper-Nunes, who lives on Monument Road, faced charges on Friday relating to the assault. According to West Midlands Police, she was apprehended once more at the same location on Wednesday morning on suspicion of harassment. She remains in police custody as investigations continue.
The councillor is scheduled to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 10 September to address the assault allegations. Harper-Nunes was elected to the city council in May to serve the Ladywood ward and has additionally run as the Green Party’s candidate for the West Midlands mayoral election in 2024.
Attempts to obtain a statement from the Birmingham Green Party about the situation have so far not resulted in any comment. The case remains under active review by law enforcement
