Hannah Stephenson, a 31-year-old from Bassingbourn, experienced a distressing ordeal after staying overnight at the Travelodge hotel located on Newmarket Road in Cambridge. Following an evening out with friends on 26 July, she chose to book a room at the hotel to avoid the expense of a taxi home. However, the following morning brought an unsettling surprise as she awoke covered in red, itchy lumps along with blood spots on the bedding — clear indicators of bed bug bites.
What started as an enjoyable night of sightseeing and socializing quickly turned into a painful and embarrassing situation for Stephenson. She described the experience as a “horrible realisation” that grew worse as the bites spread to her face and caused swelling of her arms. The ongoing discomfort has forced her to rely on antihistamines, which induce drowsiness, and has affected her social life due to self-consciousness about her appearance. Stephenson lamented, “I have felt very self-conscious. There are certain social events I haven’t gone to, as I was so embarrassed at the way my arms were looking and the way my face looked.”
Initially, Stephenson felt disregarded by the hotel when she reported the issue. It was only after posting photos of the bites on TikTok that Travelodge reached out to her. She reflected on this, saying, “I don’t think I would be at this point at the moment if I didn’t take it to TikTok.” The hotel issued a statement expressing regret over the incident, stating, “We are deeply sorry for Ms Stephenson’s experience and how distressing an incident like this can be.”
Regarding bed bug infestations, the British Pest Control Association notes that these pests become more active during warmer months, feeding and mating more frequently. Signs of their presence include red, itchy bites, blood smears on linens, and the sight of small brown insects near sleeping areas. Recommended actions in case of bed bugs involve washing infested items at high temperatures and freezing belongings for a minimum of three days. Despite living in various countries across Asia, Africa, and South America, Stephenson had never encountered bed bugs before and expressed surprise at facing such an issue in Cambridge. She hopes for a speedy recovery, saying, “I am just hoping these bites will go as soon as possible and I will look normal and get on with my life.” Travelodge has since compensated her with £2,000 and emphasized their commitment to customer safety through rigorous pest prevention and management practices
