Fhimah placed the unaccompanied bag on a conveyor belt, sending it into the international baggage system with a tag indicating it was destined for the United States. Later that same night, while Pan Am Flight 103 was cruising at 31,000 feet, the bag exploded in the plane’s forward hold.

Jamal testified in person during a hearing presided over by Judge Dabney Friedrich, who was tasked with determining whether the statement could be admitted as evidence. Prosecutors maintained that the confession’s detailed information was consistent with facts unlikely to be fabricated. However, at one point, Judge Friedrich ordered the U.S. government to obtain the original handwritten confession and the carbon copy.
