A coroner has determined that Alex Hughes, the son of former Manchester United footballer Mark Hughes, died due to sudden adult death syndrome (SADS). On 19 June, Alex was discovered collapsed at his home in Macclesfield, Cheshire, by his two sons.
At 38 years old, Alex followed in the footsteps of his father, a former Wales international, by pursuing a career in football. He worked in recruitment roles for clubs including Grimsby Town and Manchester City. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he could not be revived, according to details revealed during his inquest.
Mark Hughes and his wife Jill expressed their profound grief following the loss, stating they were “totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son.” Their statement reflected the shock and sorrow felt by the family at this tragic event.
Sudden adult death syndrome, sometimes referred to as sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, is diagnosed when a post-mortem fails to find an obvious cause of death and the heart appears structurally normal. In the UK, around 500 people are affected by SADS annually. The British Heart Foundation explains that SADS generally occurs due to an undetected abnormal heart rhythm, which can cause sudden cardiac arrest. Often, inherited heart conditions are the underlying cause, especially when the individual is unaware they carry such risks
