A disturbing incident occurred at a Travelodge hotel in Dundee last month when a couple found a shirtless man inside their room after he was wrongly given a key card. Kim Hutchison, 60, and Harry Grieve, 57, from Buckie, Moray, were staying at the Strathmore Avenue branch of the hotel when the event took place shortly after 2 a.m. on July 11. Hutchison described waking up to the sound of their door clicking and then seeing the man standing at the foot of their bed wearing only shorts and holding what she assumed was a key card.
Despite trying to remain composed, Hutchison said she was “absolutely petrified” during the confrontation. The intruder insisted that room 316 belonged to him, while the couple’s room was 313. After some tense exchanges— during which Hutchison admitted she swore—the man left after being in their room for less than a minute. The couple believed the man to be in his mid-20s. Harry Grieve attempted to seek answers by going down to the reception desk but found it unattended. Police were later called to the hotel due to a disturbance around the same time, but no arrests were made.
Following the incident, Travelodge apologised to Hutchison and Grieve, acknowledging that their updated room access and security procedures were not properly followed. They have since retrained staff at the Dundee hotel and emphasised that customer safety remains a top priority. The company also offered the couple a refund and a £100 voucher, although Grieve expressed doubt they would make use of it. He voiced concern about the risks posed by such security lapses, especially given reports earlier this year involving a man who was jailed for sexually assaulting a woman after being mistakenly given access to her room in a different Travelodge.
The couple decided to share their experience with BBC Your Voice after reading about the previous sexual assault case in the Maidenhead Travelodge on the BBC News website. Grieve stated, “It’s quite concerning. It could have been so much worse, the potential for what could have happened is huge.” He added, “We just thought it was right to speak out, hopefully the powers-that-be at Travelodge will get this sorted, and save something bad happening in the future.” Meanwhile, Travelodge confirmed that their ongoing safety review continues as they work to prevent such incidents from recurring
