A warning has been issued following a serious injury caused by hot sand on a beach after the use of a disposable barbecue. Sam Knight, aged 27, experienced third-degree burns after stepping on sand heated by a recently used barbecue at Cefn Sidan Beach in Carmarthenshire. Despite having extinguished the barbecue and moving it aside, Knight accidentally stepped on a patch of sand that remained dangerously hot, resulting in severe blisters on his feet.
Knight was unable to walk and had to be carried off the beach, requiring immediate medical attention. He was taken to Neath Port Talbot Hospital and then referred to a burns specialist for further treatment. Due to the severity of the injury, Knight was unable to return to work for two weeks as he underwent a lengthy recovery process.
Physiotherapists David Fligelstone and Menna Davies, who work at the burns centre operated by Swansea Bay University Health Board, noted a rise in such incidents. Fligelstone pointed out that these injuries are becoming more frequent each year, explaining that “sand stays hot for such a long time after a barbecue is moved.” According to him, it is typically the sand that has not been properly cooled that causes burns rather than direct contact with the barbecue itself.
Davies emphasized the severity of the wounds, describing them as “quite painful” and requiring extended periods of dressing and care. The burns centre specialists urge beach visitors to exercise caution when using disposable barbecues and to be mindful that hot sand can remain hazardous long after the fire appears to have been extinguished.
